Music for relief

Everything that was once old becomes new again. First it was vinyl and now we want to make a case for a medium that quite frankly doesn’t get enough love — the cassette tape.

An annotated score of Berg’s Lyric Suite was discovered, which he secretly dedicated to Hanna Fuchs-Robettin, with whom he was in love. Without delving too deep, the secret meaning of the Lyric Suite also made its way into Lulu, where Berg’s special use of the two notes, H (musical German for B) and F — for “Hanna Fuchs” — made yet another example of Berg’s unique predilection for coding emotion in musical geometry.

This happened on my birthday, um, nine years before I was born. Unfortunately, Jackson’s dancing skills were not passed down to me on this of most holy days. The brilliant dancer he was, the King of Pop popularized the Moonwalk on Motown 25 in 1983.

My intro-level music tech classes usually include a wide range of production and songwriting abilities. Some students have never used a computer for any creative purpose whatsoever, while others are already accomplished bedroom producers or DJs. I get tracks that are complete, polished works of art, and tracks that are in total shambles. So rather than try to compare these efforts to each other, I use a growth mindset.

Alongside the environmental sounds of forest streams, crickets, and birdsong, Yoshimura recorded an incredibly unobtrusive, ambient tapestry of synthesized tones using a Yamaha DX7, TX7, and FB01, and a Roland MSQ-700 Sequencer in his home studio. Immerse yourself in this one!

Many of the acts that you’ll reach out to will have a booking agent or manager responding on their behalf, and while this may seem daunting at first, it actually makes everything much easier. Booking agents are typically more responsive (and more professional!) than musicians so don’t be scared off by their very official websites and emails.

“My experience with Soundfly was beyond expectations. When I enrolled the class I didn’t know how great the class would be designed and how personalized it would be! I really appreciated to have a mentor, I felt supported and pushed to reach my goals. Sırma is incredible! Every time I received an e-mail from her I was excited to read her feedback!”

Some songwriters say they have received amounts equal to a ten-year advance on royalties. The money has been used to take their career in a new direction, buy new equipment or fund a tour or music video. However, not everyone may have a roster of songs that will sell for enough money to pay the electric bill. Keep in mind that once you sell your rights to your intellectual property, you waive your right to collect any future royalties it may generate.

The MIDI version is richly informative. There are long passages where there’s almost no rhythmic correspondence between the notes as written (and as “performed” in the MIDI) and the way that humans perform them. People are playing the same notes in the same order, but have pretty much thrown Bach’s written rhythms out the window. But the MIDI isn’t a very satisfying listening experience.

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1947, Ischi was a self-described “loner” who had a difficult time fitting in. He heard yodeling on the radio as a child and became obsessed with the sound of it. It clearly made a massive impact on him, because his life was set on a completely different course after that.

When you pluck a guitar string, it vibrates to and fro. You can tell how fast the string is vibrating by listening to the pitch it produces. Shorter strings vibrate faster, and make higher pitches. Longer strings vibrate slower, and make lower pitches. The scientific term for the rate at which the string vibrates is its frequency. You measure frequency in hertz (Hz), otherwise known as vibrations per second. The standard tuning pitch, A440, is the pitch you get when your guitar string vibrates to and fro 440 times per second.
