According to the Ed Sullivan website, the popular host struck a handshake deal with Beatles manager Brian Epstein for, rather than a one-time appearance, a three-time opener/closer appearance. This offered exposure to over 23 million American homes on that very first performance, and thus, the ensuing Beatlemania took the United States by storm.

I’d hesitate to call Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Music for Nine Post Cards a lost treasure, as this record has very much been sought after since its initial release. Yoshimura composed this music while watching the scenery outside the window change; clouds passing, sunlight flickering, and leaves moving in the wind. He recorded it and offered it to a contemporary museum in Tokyo to be played next to the window overlooking their courtyard. After some time, Satoshi Ashikawa (see below) started his label and the resulting “Wave Notation” series, to publish this ambient masterpiece after museumgoers started calling to ask where they could buy it.

We love that Project Sonata’s pitch video is highly informative and makes learning about this strange Japanese synth-voice program, and the global culture around it, interesting and fun. Both the organization’s and the campaign’s message empower female electronic music creators and people who suffer from clinical depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health issues through the limitless palette of UTAU.

This can all be accomplished on a relatively low budget, taking advantage of just a handful of actors and props, and a mixture of free shooting locations.

“Finesse” (Remix): Cardi B drops herself into this remix in a relatively extended intro. There’s also a pre-chorus, as well as a fake-out bridge which I’m going to call a “pre-bridge” (P2). My favorite part of this section, this song, and maybe this entire study in general, is that just when you think the whole thing is going to be done over the three-chord loop of♭VI  V  i, they throw in a ♭vii to ♭III turnaround, or, for the functionally minded, a “ii  V  I” that resolves back to D♭. This tonal trick, as well as the extensions and voicings, are really typical of the era they’re harkening back to in the video. Super clever.

Before we move deeper into our analysis of this track, take another good look at the image above. Those are all the diatonic triads built on top of the scale tones of E♭ major. If this is new to you, I strongly suggest playing these chords on your chosen instrument. See if you can hear the relationship between each chord.

Not every house show needs to be strictly acoustic, but most don’t provide the space or gear for earth-shattering volumes or fancy sound effects. These limited setups sharpen an artist’s performance skills and often lead to new creative interpretations of their music, and more comfort in one’s ability to make do.

Lulu the character may have met with a brutal fate, but at least Lulu the masterpiece was saved from an equally terrible punishment in obscurity. Berg, to quote a great German philosopher, was all too human. It’s this deep emotion that shines through in his work, mediated as it is by the most formal of compositional techniques.

Modes and Key Signatures have a variety of different characteristics and are great for outside-the-box songwriting. Here’s a cheat sheet to remember them!

“Perfect”: The pre-chorus section here does something fun, changing up about half the lyrics to make it kind of like a pre-chorus/verse hybrid type thing. I can’t remember when I’ve seen that before, at least not to this degree of lyrical tinkering.

Music should be something you’re desperately passionate about if you want it to be your career, but if you don’t convert that passion into real work and goal-oriented planning, chances are nothing is going to happen for you. So set aside hours to get things done, make a list of goals, and start putting in the work whether it feels fun and rewarding or boring and forced.
